This tool provides an estimate for informational purposes only. It uses the NHS pay scales for England, which are a very close guide for Wales and Northern Ireland but not Scotland. It does not account for local variations or other allowances. Always refer to your official payslip for exact figures.
Understanding Agenda for Change Pay
Your NHS salary is determined by a framework called Agenda for Change (AfC). Here's how it works.
Pay Bands
Every non-medical role in the NHS is assigned a 'band' from 1 to 9. The band reflects the level of responsibility and skill required for the job. Higher bands have higher salary ranges.
Pay Points
Within each band, there are 'pay points' which you move up through as you gain experience in your role. This calculator uses your years of experience to determine the correct pay point and salary for your band.
NHS Pension
The NHS Pension Scheme is a defined benefit scheme. Your contribution rate is tiered, meaning the percentage you pay is based on your pensionable salary. This calculator automatically works out the correct contribution rate for you.
