Understanding the Calculator

The values in this calculator can be adjusted to get the most accurate picture of your earnings.

Gross Annual Salary ($)

This is your total yearly salary before any deductions are made. Don't include your bonus here – there's a separate field for that.

Bonus / Commission ($)

If you receive any one-off payments on top of your regular salary, like an annual bonus, enter the total amount here. This is added to your salary for tax and ACC levy calculations.

KiwiSaver Contribution

Select your contribution rate to your KiwiSaver retirement savings scheme. The deduction is made from your after-tax pay. Note that this calculator does not include the employer contribution or government contribution.

NZ Student Loan

If you have a student loan from StudyLink, enable this switch. Repayments are calculated as 12% of every dollar you earn over the annual repayment threshold.

Understanding Your Deductions

The New Zealand PAYE (Pay As You Earn) system has several main components deducted from your salary:

  • Income Tax: Calculated using progressive tax brackets. Unlike the UK or Australia, there is no tax-free allowance; you pay tax from the first dollar you earn.
  • ACC Earner's Levy: A compulsory levy on your income that funds New Zealand's no-fault accident insurance scheme. It is charged at a flat rate on your income up to a certain cap.
